Devon and Somerset Gliding Club will be running a Women Go Gliding event on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th April to introduce more women to the experience of aviation and soaring flight.
Of almost 30,000 pilots in the UK, fewer than 5% are women. Aviation as a career industry and a sport has been slow to change that demographic, but Devon and Somerset Gliding Club is determined to change that and help more women take flight.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to fly in a glider? Come to our Women Go Gliding Weekend and you can experience silent flight while flying with a qualified Instructor.
During the Women Go Gliding weekend, DSGC is offering flights to potential new women members for a special discounted price of £25 for under 21s and £50 for over 21s. The flight includes 1 winch launch, flight time will be a maximum of 15 minutes, but is dependent on the weather.
The special rate includes 1 month of temporary membership and for those who return and become permanent flying members of DSGC, the cost of the flights during this weekend will be rebated from the initial membership subscription fees.
This event is operated on a first come - first served basis, flights cannot be pre-booked, please just turn up between 10:00 and 4:00pm.
The Devon and Somerset Gliding Club is located at North Hill Airfield on the south-west corner of the Blackdown Hills above Broadhembury. Five miles to the east of Cullompton, and five miles to the north-west of Honiton.
There are some restrictions on pilot height and weight. Young people under the age of 18 will require a parent or guardian's written consent. Also there are a few medical conditions which may make it unsafe to fly.
If you are uncertain or want to discuss things first, please contact the club or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for further information. Women of every age are encouraged to learn and take part. Youngsters can learn to fly from the age of 12 and can qualify as a solo pilot at 14! It is an exciting hobby and it can also open a career in aviation.
Hot and cold food and drinks are available all day.
The National Women’s Go Gliding Weekend is being run by almost 30 gliding clubs across the country, from Scotland to the West Country. The British Gliding Association (BGA) is supporting clubs’ efforts to recruit more women members and be more representative of society.
